He abhors sliders (wanging about as he calls it) and everything is done with a high degree of numerical precision - he strives for facsimile, close does not count. For a better experience, please enable JavaScript in your browser before proceeding.I am also a Canon shooter (not Fuji) So why am I here I recently stumbled on Guy Gowan and in trying to find as much as info as I could about him found that there was a lot of discussion about his services and techniques on this forum back in 2014.So I was wondering if there are any members of this forum who are current members of his Subscription or have been relatively recently, and that you might shed some light if his website is more coherent and organized than it was back in 2014 and if it worth subscribing to.
Im not sure hes still doing the same stuff now, and I wont have time to look til later today. But his thrust back then was for bulk processing of images and thats just not something I do. I think his ideal customer (back then anyway) was somebody like a Wedding Pro Photographer who needs to process the best possible images but who has a lot to get through and needs to do that quickly. Essentially his process works (or worked - I havent looked more recently) in Photoshop and it automatically creates different layers for different parts of the tonal curve. It does give very good results I found - especially when dynamic range is an issue. ![]() So I loved the results but used his approach too infrequently to be worth the ongoing subscription. To this day - though - I regard the subscription I did have as money well spent. I am not a volume shooter and not looking for or need an action for batch processing. A lot of my work is studio - Low Key and High key under controlled conditions, so do not know how valuable his action would be for that. But for outdoor work I do have problems with skin tone color (green color casts) and dynamic range. We had absolutely perfect weather until wed been at Macchu Pichu for about an hour and a half. Then it suddenly started raining - oh well we thought - weve been very lucky so far. But, as as we thought that, the rain almost stopped, the sun came out and we were presented with the utterly amazing sight of a double rainbow over the famous ruins It was a lovely moment - and a fantastic photo op - but the images were really hard to process as well as I would have liked. Well the GG process managed a far better job - in a few minutes - than I would otherwise have been able to do. So there are definitely times when its a great set of tools to have in your toolkit. ![]() Guy Gowan Action Set Update Myself OnSo Im really pleased to have the older versions - and should take the time to update myself on whats new - but I personally couldnt justify an ongoing subscription for my level of use. But he clearly has the difficulty of not knowing when his audience will already know stuff (or not) - so, as you get more into it - it can get a bit repetitive. But thats not really a criticism, as such, because I can understand why. The man is a genius in what he does with extracting information from raw files.
